Affirmations can be a simple way to Fight Your Fears and make progress to achieving goals etc . 

 

What are affirmations? 

Affirmations are just positive statements that you make to yourself that have the potential to change the way you think and behave.

 

Affirmations seem simple on the surface, but they must be understood in order to use them effectively.

Keep Affirmations Positive.

How to use affirmations to  Fight and Conquer Your Fears  

Affirmations work better if they’re positive rather than negative. 

For example:

“I am not afraid of heights” isn’t as effective as “I find heights exhilarating”.

Your brain has a better understanding of what you’re trying to accomplish if your affirmations are stated in the affirmative.

Negative statements seem to confuse the part of your brain that you’re trying to reach. You might end up with more of what you’re trying to avoid!

 

Use The Present Tense. 

It’s also important to keep your statements in the present tense

. The affirmation “I will be brave around people” is stated in the future. 

If this affirmation actually came true, you’d never be brave around people because this is a character trait that you plan to have in the future!

“I am courageous when speaking to people” is a more effective affirmation

.

Avoid Using Too Many. 

Repeating 150 affirmations means that you can’t repeat them too often or you’d never do anything else. 

Too many affirmations also scatter your attention over too many items. 

Five to ten affirmations are about right.

 

Use Them Regularly. 

 Use affirmations to  Fight and Conquer Your Fears by repeating a few times each day. 

Preferably at least three times if you’re serious. 

That’s three times every single day. 

It’s only a few minutes each time. You have time for that

.

Make Your Own. 

There are endless lists of affirmations but be choosy. 

Find affirmations that appeal to you or make your own. 

The most effective affirmations are the ones that you create but look at the affirmations of others for ideas.

 

The Best Affirmations Elicit An Emotion

. 

Every affirmation you choose to use should make you feel something when you repeat it. 

Affirmations with an emotional jolt are more effective.

We like to think we’re logical, but we really aren’t. 

If we were actually driven by logic, we’d never overeat, skip the gym, or procrastinate. 

Logic only shows us what we should do, but often fail to do

.

Visualise. 

Have an image in your mind that represents your affirmation. 

It might be you eating a healthy meal, meeting the person of your dreams, or fearlessly entering a competition . 

If you can’t imagine it, you can’t accomplish it.

Make Use Of The Time Just After Waking Up And Just Before Falling Asleep. 

The two best times to repeat affirmations are right when you wake up and right before you fall asleep. 

You’re in that dreamy, half-awake state.

9 Ways To Combat Fear

Fear of Fear

 All of us have experienced fear at some point in our lives and it can be a real stumbling block that holds us back from being truly successful.

Fear can’t hold you back forever, if you don’t let it. 

There are several ways to overcome fear, here are my top 9:

1. SEPARATE REALITY FROM PERCEPTION

Ask yourself what is really going on, locate the facts and place them over your feelings.

2. IDENTIFY THE TRIGGER

Figure out what it is in a situation that triggers you. Learning to identify it will help you learn to combat it.

3. KNOW WHERE FEAR LIVES IN YOUR BODY

A lot of times, fear takes over physically. It affects different people in different ways. Identify if/how it affects your physical body and do the work to take care of your body. Ex: if you hold stress in your back, you can learn stretches, foam rolling, etc. to avoid the pain.

 

4. PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Everyday, list out 1-3 things you are thankful for. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, gratitude helps shift the mind into a positive light, which overtime, overcomes fear.

5. LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE

Monitor your inner conversations. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself. Speak positively to yourself and remind yourself of your strengths.

6. CREATE A NEW ASSOCIATION

Remind yourself that the feeling and the moment will pass.

 Focus on the positive outcome of the situation, rather than the scary inbetween.

7. LOOK AT THE GLASS HALF FULL

Perception is a very powerful thing, and how you feel about your situation dictates how you respond. 

So think positively and you’ll give yourself a much better chance of success. 

This won’t happen overnight; practice with just one thought. 

What is one recurring negative/fearful thought you have? 

Work on reversing this one thought. Overtime, this will become a habit.

8. PRACTICE BREATHING EXERCISES

Breathing helps centre your body 

You can do a grounding exercise, or even just take 5 deep, long breaths at any point to calm and centre yourself.

 It is best to start your day with this, but feel free to practice all day long.

9. CREATE A SAFE SPACE

When you feel safe and secure, there is no room for fear.

 Find somewhere safe you can retreat to when ill feelings begin- whether this is a real place such as your bedroom, or a place in your mind such as the beach. 

This sense of comfort will soothe you and allow you to face your fear.
